My First Multimedia: An Overview of Our City's New Transport

I created this, my first multimedia, with my fellow staffer Zach Heimbuch. It was an extensive and time consuming process to create this innovative storytelling format. I spent countless hours trying to create a background map on MapBox that would fit our needs. Then we went through each Q-Line (a train) stop and took pictures. Finally, we did extensive research on each stop to find activities and buildings nearby, which I linked within the post. We were rewarded with a first place interactive graphic award from MIPA and a third place from CSPA. Multimedia design comes hand in hand with being a good Page Editor as many of the same skills we acquire working with the Adobe InDesign Software can be transferred to Multimedia designs.

My Next Multimedia: Adventure in the Northern Wilderness

This was very similar to the last multimedia, but obviously a new topic and I had to create a whole new map for the background. This time I went with a more nature-like look for the map. We went through our different activities in Northern Michigan taking photos and writing about them all. We composed this multimedia because it is a topic that is very relevant to our community which has a big presence in the Northern area.

My Radio Show: News Across the Many Platforms

This is the most long-running project I have been involved in within the Tower. It started Junior year eight myself, now Head of Tower Radio Zach Heimbuch, and the current Online Editor in Chief Henry Ayrault. We wanted something fun and journalistic we could do together, so we created our radio show/podcast “The Weekly Recap”. Our show is a humorous news show where we describe current events within the school or local community plus some national situations that are relevant to the student body. We cover topics from entertainment to school sports. One of the big ironies of our show is that we are, very obviously, not actually a weekly show. We post rather haphazardly and a long-running joke is naming our episodes “We’re back”; despite this silliness, we are very focused on journalistic integrity, newsworthiness, and honesty. We have a decent listener base and a wide range of fans. Often times, we find different guests from a variety of grades, staffers or students, to come to talk with us.

Last year we expanded our presence to include a Twitter and Instagram account. Our Instagram account is a more personal side of the show which includes daily posts with fun facts or other tidbits. The Twitter is mainly used for announcements to our fan base I have created all of the art for our radio show including our Twitter and Instagram profiles and our Spreaker image.

This radio show will continue to be one of my favorite memories during high schools. Just doing some journalism with a few pals.
